II Tim 4:1 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;
II Tim 4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
II Tim 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
II Tim 4:4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
II Tim 4.5 But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.

II Tim 4:1 "I charge thee therefore before God,"

Mat 26.59 "Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death;"
Mat 26.60 "But found none: yea, though many false witnesses came, yet found they none. At the last came two false witnesses,"
Mat 26.61 "And said, This fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days."
Mat 26.62 "And the high priest arose, and said unto him, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee?"
Mat 26.63 "But Jesus held his peace. ...

Jesus would not talk
He would not defend himself ... Physically or Verbally

"And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God."
Mat 26.64 "Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven."

Jesus answered when he was adjured.
So, What does it mean to be adjured?
Look at Joshua 6.26 ...
The time slot for Joshua 6 is the Battle of Jericho.
The battle is over and Joshua is addressing Israel.
He tells them the following ...

Josh 6.26 "And Joshua adjured them at that time, saying, Cursed be the man before the LORD, that riseth up and buildeth this city Jericho: he shall lay the foundation thereof in his firstborn, and in his youngest son shall he set up the gates of it."

Joshua bound them with an oath and a curse.
He said,
I put an oath and a curse on you today.

The oath was not voluntarily accepted
It was forced on the people

Joshua told them
1. If anyone of them should rebuild the city of Jericho, he would lose his oldest son
2. If he rebuilt the gates, he would lose his youngest son.

Joshua charged Israel that day
To leave Jericho alone.
If not, there was a curse to follow.

Of course, in the New Testament
We are warned about taking oaths.

James 5.12 "But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation."

But Paul mentions a charge several times.
Our Text is an example

Jesus allowed Himself to be adjured or charged
We saw that a moment ago.

What is the tie between a Charge & Adjurment?

Simply look up the usage of the 2
See how they are used interchangeably

Our time does not allow for us ...
to go into all the mechanics
but an earnest seeker of the Truth
will readily find that Paul was binding his men
who took his place to do and be certain things

Remember!
Once they surrendered to the work
they were bound by the parameters of the work.
The constraints, limitations and even liberties
were not an option.
The same with Adjurment in the Old Testament.

These are some things that are expected of him
Not of me
Not of this church
But of God.

So they are A Binding, An Adjurment, A Charge

Correct your followers
Correct your helpers
Correct your leaders
Correct those who are not in your camp
To come to Christ
To live for Christ
To work for Christ
To die for Christ

You are Charged to Rebuke!

...rebuke, ...
(Jer 1:17) "Thou therefore gird up thy loins,
and arise,
and speak unto them all that I command thee:
be not dismayed at their faces,
lest I confound thee before them."

Don't be afraid
Of their faces
Of their tongues
Of their threats
Or God will take away what he has given you.

You are Charged to Exhort!

...exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine....
The time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine ...
They shall turn away their ears from the truth ...
(Heb 10:25) "Not forsaking
the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is;
but exhorting one another:
and so much the more,
as ye see the day approaching."

Exhort
with the Doctrine of the Word of God
with Patience and in the face of Contrary Devices

Exhort
and be exhorted
and more each day because our time is short

You are charged to Watch!

...But watch thou in all things, ...

Watch are Guard over
Every one
Every endeavor
Every day

Watching is Protective Prayer
While the rest Sleep
While the rest Play
While the rest Work
While the rest are doing the same as you

1 Pet 4.7 "But the end of all things is at hand:
be ye therefore sober,
and watch unto prayer."
Col 4.2 Continue in prayer,
and watch in the same
with thanksgiving;

You are charged to Endure!

...endure afflictions, ...
1 Pet 2:19 "For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully."
Heb 12:2 "Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God."
2 Tim 3:11 "Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me."

Because ...

James 1:12 "Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him."
Psa 118.6 "The Lord is on my side, I will not fear"
Psa 54.4 "The Lord is my helper"
Rom 8.31 "If God be for us, who can be against us?"
Heb 6:15 "And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise."

How

Plant the seed of the Word
Water the seed of the Word
Let God give the increase from the Word

Be a soul-winner and warner.
Warn them all
Win the ones who will heed the warning

You are charged to give Evidence of your ministry!

...make full proof of thy ministry."

Prove your ministry
by doing it
by working it
by employing it

And allowing God
to bring the results.

Everyone will lean back and say
God was in it,
Proof! ...

Ezek 33:33 "And when this cometh to pass, (lo, it will come,) then shall they know that a prophet hath been among them."

You are charged to Receive from God, not man!

Hag 2. 10 In the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying,
Hag 2.11 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Ask now the priests concerning the law, saying,
Hag 2.12 If one bear holy flesh in the skirt of his garment, and with his skirt do touch bread, or pottage, or wine, or oil, or any meat, shall it be holy? And the priests answered and said, No.
Hag 2.13 Then said Haggai, If one that is unclean by a dead body touch any of these, shall it be unclean? And the priests answered and said, It shall be unclean.
Hag 2.14 Then answered Haggai, and said, So is this people, and so is this nation before me, saith the LORD; and so is every work of their hands; and that which they offer there is unclean.

What am I saying?
You have no goodness or holiness of yourself
We can only pass on the bad.

The Holy Flesh was put in the skirt
Then the skirt became holy.
But nothing it touched there after became holy.

The Spirit of the Lord
Came down to the set-a-part flesh

The Spirit of the Lord
Past on to the skirt or container

But that is as far as it goes

God can give me something
And I can give it to you,
But you can't do a thing with it.

We are ordaining you a minister of the Gospel
You must be able to pass on from God to others.
So you must receive it directly from the Lord.

You can't get it from the Commentaries
And still pass it on

You can't get it from the other preachers
And still pass it on

You can't get if from the 1828 Dictionary
And still pass it on

Do your own work

Do your own study

Do your own praying

Do your own receiving

Get it directly from the Lord
So you can pass it on.

You are charged to live a Righteous Life!

1 Tim 6.11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.
I Tim 6.12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.
1 Tim 6.13 I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession;
1 Tim 6.14 That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ:

I charge you in the sight of God
Follow after Righteousness
Follow after Godliness
Follow after Faith
Follow after Love
Follow after Patience
Follow after Meekness

Do this without Spot, without Fail

Do this to the extent that no one may accuse you differently
And have grounds for their accusation.

You are charged to not give in to Fear!

(1 Pet 2:17) "Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king."
(1 Pet 2:18) "Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward."
(Heb 13:6) "So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me."

Don't let the Fear Mongerers get control of your life

I will not fear what man shall do unto me

Don't listen to the anti-government crowd

I will not fear what man shall do unto me

Don't listen to the anti-religious crowd

I will not fear what man shall do unto me

Don't take part in the United Nations Scare

I will not fear what man shall do unto me

Don't take part in the Black Helicopter Scare

I will not fear what man shall do unto me

Don't take part in the Ozone Scare

I will not fear what man shall do unto me

Don't take part in the Illuminatti Scare

I will not fear what man shall do unto me

And teach your people to do the same

1 John 4:18 "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love."
(Heb 10:31) "It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God."
(2 Tim 1:7) "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind."
(Rom 8:15) "For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father."

Don't worry about

What everyone is preaching
What everyone is saying
What hearsy is being taught

Phil 1.14 And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.
Phil 1.15 Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will:
Phil 1.16 The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds:
Phil 1.17 But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel.
Phil 1.18 What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice.

We have studied
about False Prophets and False Teachers
it is not our job to fight them,

The Bible says,
Mark them
Avoid them
But don't dirty your hands on them
Don't pull the weeds out of the wheat field and disturb the wheat
all will all be sorted out at the Harvest.

You are charged to Live as a Bishop!

(1 Tim 3:1) "This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work."
(1 Tim 3:2) "A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;"
(1 Tim 3:3) "Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;"
(1 Tim 3:4) "One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;"
(1 Tim 3:5) "(For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)"
(1 Tim 3:6) "Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil."

This is the killer ...
If you don't have knowledge and understanding,
Learn!

And in the mean time ...
Keep your mouth shut
Don't address the issues you are lacking in
Seek counsel

(1 Tim 3:7) "Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil."
(1 Tim 3:8) "Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;"

Notice that there is a place in the church for deacons.
Don't let anyone talk you out of it.
If you do not have deacon material in your church, grow up some.
If you don't grow up some men to be deacons, you are not doing your job.

Do not let the misbehavior of some
scare you away from obtaining good, committed help

Skip down to verse 14

(1 Tim 3:14) "These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly:"
(1 Tim 3:15) "But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth."
(1 Tim 3:16) "And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory."

This is the essence of what is to be preached.
Jesus came in the flesh
Jesus was preached to the Gentiles
Jesus is to be believed on by the lost
Jesus was received to the right hand of the Father.

And I always throw in
Jesus is coming again
Jesus will judge the wicked

(1 Tim 4:1) "Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;"
(1 Tim 4:2) "Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;"

Their conscience is seared
Leave them alone
Avoid them
Stick to the work at hand

(1 Tim 4:3) "Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth."
(1 Tim 4:4) "For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:"
(1 Tim 4:5) "For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer."
(1 Tim 4:6) "If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained."
(1 Tim 4:7) "But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness."

Old Wives Tales are
Logic and / or emotion proved with obscure Bible Verses

Don't listen to what others say.
What they say to you.
What they say to your children
What they say to your wife
What they say to your members.

Not only should you not listen to what they say
But encourage them to live like you do.

(1 Tim 4:8) "For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come."

Godliness
Godliness is not in the refraning from ungodliness
But it is the commission
of loving the brethren and
even your enemies

Look at verse 12

(1 Tim 4:9) "This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation."
(1 Tim 4:10) "For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe."
(1 Tim 4:11) "These things command and teach."
(1 Tim 4:12) "Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity."

Word
Let your speech be an example, not your refraining from bad speech

Conversation
Let your fellowship be an example, not your not refraining from a bad life

Charity
Let your loving for the right reasons be an example, not your refraining from hate

Spirit
Let your spirit be an example, not your refraining from a bad spirit

Faith
Let your trust in God be an example, not your refraining from fear

Purity
Let your purity be an example, not your refraining from the profane

(1 Tim 4:13) "Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine."

Reading
Care for you studying

Exhortation
Incite others to do the right thing

Doctrine
Stick to the truth

(1 Tim 4:14) "Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery."

Gift
Due to your identification with the Elders, God will give you a part or gift to contribute to the carrying out of His will.
God has always given me the gift that I needed for the time.

If I needed to be a carpenter, I got it
If I needed to be a soul-winner, I got it
If I needed to be a teacher, I got it
If I needed to write a poem for someone passing on, I got it
If I needed to ordain a minister, I got it
What ever was needed was the gift that God gave me

Don't listen
To these people claiming some special gift
that God has given them
and want to exercise it amongst the brethren.
This is most always
carnal and fleshly
of the world and
the devil

What needs to be done?
Tell the Lord your need and ask him for the skill and wisdom to do it and since you have identified with those that do the same, He will give that gift to you.

Spooky
There is no mysticism here.
There is no religious superstition
There is nothing spooky about all of this

In other words
There is no gift granted simply because an ordained minister laid his hands on you.
Man has no power, nor nothing worthwhile to give you, even the truth. Everything must come from God. Seek God's face and will.
All power is of God.
All gifts are of the Holy Spirit.

(1 Tim 4:15) "Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all."

Think about all of this
Give yourself to them
So that everyone can see that God is blessing your work.

(1 Tim 4:16) "Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee."

This will help you
And the people you lead.

Do not take heed to the so-called leaders of the Church.
Do your own thinking.
Do your own study work.

You will expect your people to read the Bible and get something from it.
Shouldn't you?

You don't need to quote
Jack Hyles or
John Rice or
Lee Roberson or
Peter Ruckman or whoever is currently in the limelight
When they pass on, there will be much that they will regret as well as the rest of us.

Concern yourself with ...
"Thus saith the Lord"

The brethren of the Charge
lay hands on the one being charged
to bind him to the ministry
to which he has surrendered.

Again, there is no mysticism here.
There is no transfere of

Knowledge

Holiness

Power

Grace

Or anything else
from the Chargers
But much of all and more
from the Lord
in immeasurable amounts

The Laying on of Hands
is simply an identification
of the one being Charged
to the Chargers
and the Chargers
to the one being Charged.

The one being Charged
Believes as the Chargers do
Lives are the Chargers do
Ministers as the Chargers do
Has Surrendered as the Chargers have
